At the age of 12, Richard Marshall started his career merely by sweeping floors and making tea in a barber shop in London. At 15, schooling was no longer an option as he could not read and write.

But, 30 years later, he is in a position that many would envy –the owner of a reputed barber shop brand in London. Pall Mall Barbers is a chain of six barber shops in London and one flagship store in NYC. The leading barbershop with high-quality grooming services for men who like to be a cut above the rest.

The Motivation for a New Leap

Visiting Midtown has always been Richard’s dream ever since he caught a glimpse of its magnificence on T.V. He fondly remembers watching the movie “Trading Places” and admiring the Midtown Skyline in awe. For him, it was love at first sight. He had a deep urge to visit it, and the opportunity dawned in 2006.

Streets bustling with life, attractive stores of every kind, charming nightlife with great clubs, diners serving varieties of cuisine, and everything else in Midtown was a captivating sight. He walked the whole of Manhattan and fell in love with the glamourous city. It was then that the idea dawned on him. He wanted to establish his barber shop Midtown

. Like his heart was set on it like a dream at the time.

Embracing New Prospects 

Several years sped past, and he continued to expand Pall Mall Barbers, opening many branches. Richard was living in La Barceloneta in Spain. He remembers enjoying picturesque sunsets overlooking Port Vell. 

The Start of Barber Shop Midtown

Determined not to give up, Richard contacted some men’s grooming products resellers in the USA the next day. He hoped to find a new market now that Europe seemed unhopeful. The conversations went exceptionally well to his delight, and he was asked to take part in the upcoming New York Now Trade Show. It is one of the iconic shows held twice a year for wholesalers and retailers seeking novel lifestyle products.

Richard flew to attend the show and introduce Pall Mall Barbers’ range of grooming products to interested people. Little did he know that his visit had more surprises in store for him – a stepping stone in his career! The barber shop Midtown!

His products received a lot of attention and interest from the visitors at the show, and needless to say, it was a huge success. 

After all, who turns away from top-notch quality products? It was a fantastic experience for Richard, with his product range in high demand by many potential buyers.

The Dream Come True 

On the last day of the show, he went on a casual walk to enjoy Midtown, a city that had captured his heart at first glance. He ended up at the Rockefeller Centre and entered Eddies Shoeshine & Repair. Richard observed that many people at that shop were businessmen – the usual clientele of Pall Mall Barbers. 

As the store next to Eddies Shoeshine & Repair was vacant, he made no delays in calling the relevant people. He met with the agents the very next day and was delighted to find out that one of them was from London.

The agent was an old client of a barber shop in Mayfair where Richard used to work in. It made it easier for Richard to convey his requirements. He sold them his vision and his desire to bring the classic English barber shop experience to Midtown. 

The Barber Shop Midtown Transformation

He explained how he could transform the vacant store into an elegant barber shop with wood panelling and traditional fittings. It took two and a half years to discuss and negotiate matters, and eventually, Pall Mall Barbers was ready to fly overseas! 

For Richard, it was a dream come true. The whole process of opening a barber shop Midtown is a vivid memory for him. He still remembers when he flew to Midtown to sign the 15-year lease agreement, feeling excited like the child he watched “Trading Places.” After many years, his dream has come true.

The Flagship Barber Shop Midtown

Pall Mall Barbers Midtown barber shop was opened on the day Christmas lights were ablaze at the Rockefeller Centre – a special moment symbolizing the holiday season. They gave our team VIP tickets to watch the lighting of the iconic Rockefeller Christmas Tree. 

Richard remembers many celebrities being present for the event and Diana Ross delighting the audience with an impressive singing performance. The Pall Mall Barbers Midtown team was next to the tree with their families, enjoying it all! It was a memorable occasion.

From then, Barber Shop Midtown rose in popularity among gentlemen who preferred a classic barber shop experience when getting their haircuts. It was a unique experience. 

We have emerged as a barber shop Midtown that provides more than “just a haircut.” It’s a relaxing space where people can spend some time happily while getting their haircuts. We also introduced our high-quality range of men’s grooming products in our barber shop Midtown. 

Awards Recognizing the Unwavering Spirit

Richard managed to create Pall Mall Barbers as a globally recognized brand by opening a store in NYC and introducing PMB’s signature grooming products to overseas markets.

In 2019, Pall Mall Barbers won the U.K Board of Trade Award, recognizing their collaboration with the Department of International Trade and supporting the export industry. 

Another significant achievement is the Retail Leisure International Awards! The 4th RLI Awards ceremony was held at Universal Studios, and Pall Mall Barbers won the RLI Rising Star Award 2019. Read more about it here.
